Specialist Services

A full range of services are available to children at the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, managed when indicated by multi-disciplinary teams consisting of specialists paediatricians, general paediatricians, paediatric surgeons, nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and dietitians.

Important paediatric services include neonatology with unique survival of extreme low birth weight babies; cardiology (heart); infectious diseases with international experts in HIV and TB; pulmonology (lungs) and neurology (nerves). The Tygerberg Children’s Hospital also offers internationally acclaimed expertise in endocrinology (endocrine glands); haematology (blood), oncology (cancer), nephrology (kidneys), gastroentology (digestive system) and the very important scarce South African resource of two dedicated Intensive Care Units (one for Paediatrics and the other for Neonates).

The secondary services include emergency paediatric medicine, short stay facilities and ambulatory paediatrics.
