Tygerberg Children’s Hospital is internationally renowned for its clinical research in childhood tuberculosis and HIV related disease. The research done in the Hospital has influenced international policy through the World Health Organization on how TB and HIV are managed in children. Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS research has been facilitated by the establishment of the Desmond Tutu TB Centre and KIDCRU (Children’s Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Unit).

Other areas of excellence are clinical research in childhood cancer, neonatal lung disease and the care of the premature baby.
