Renovation of the Infection Control Centre

Development of isolation facilities for airborne disease, particularly TB including drug-resistant TB, is a major priority for the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital. A 24-bed Paediatric Isolation Unit (PIU) constructed in ward G10 will replace the current Gastroenterology and Infectious Diseases ward (G7). It would function as a multipurpose isolation facility, including a 6-bed (separate cubicles) airborne disease isolation area (for TB, measles and varicella cases) and 18-beds for contact isolation of tertiary gastroenterology and tertiary infectious diseases patients.

The estimated cost for G10 PIU construction is R2,663,500. Additional nursing staff will be required since the airborne isolation area will be self-contained (one sister and 2 nurses per shift in addition to the current staff complement.)
